-Liberty's bid sees e-potential in Barnes & Noble
INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS
23 May 2011 - Liberty Media made a surprising offer for Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) on Thursday night, bringing the troubled bookseller under the spotlight again and suggesting interest in its e-book business, the Financial Times said at the weekend.
Liberty said that as part of its bid it would pay around USD500m (EUR352m) in cash, depending on the available funds, for about 70% of Barnes & Noble. The offer suggests Liberty expects the bookseller's biggest shareholder Leonard Riggio to remain in the business with his stake of about 30%.
According to a person with knowledge of Liberty Media, the company's Liberty Capital arm sat on around USD1.3bn in cash, which it wanted to invest, and considered Barnes & Noble a well-run business, which offered limited risk and could use its position as the second-biggest US e-book seller to grow further.
The offer of USD17 a share, representing a 20% premium on Thursday close, comes as the bookseller is set to unveil a new model of its e-reader Nook, which has captured 25% of the US e-book market.

VIC:Police shooting car found near Melbourne
MELBOURNE, Aug 31 AAP - An allegedly stolen car involved in a police shooting in Melbourne's
north has been found.
A tip-off from the public led police to the car in Craigieburn on the city's outskirts
about 6.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday and they are still looking for 18-year-old Joshua Naggs
over the incident.
Nearly eight hours earlier, two plain-clothes officers had approached the car parked
in Roxburgh Park to question the driver.
One officer smashed the driver's side window to grab the man as he revved the engine.
The offender then drove at the second officer, who fired one shot.
Police say the offender performed a U-turn and drove at the unmanned and unmarked police
car before veering off.
After a short pursuit, police abandoned the chase for safety reasons.

Bitrix Study Reveals Advantages of Off-the-Shelf Content Management and Social Intranet Solutions
Type: News
Bitrix, Inc., a technology trendsetter in business communications, announced that it introduced a new study of the top five reasons off-the-shelf CMS and social intranet software offer advantages over custom-built solutions.
According to a release, the study demonstrates that the functionality and availability of off-the-shelf software makes in- house development obsolete in terms of security and associated risks.
At present, there is still wide-spread use of custom-built CMS's to power website management, e-commerce, e-marketing and social intranet solutions. In reality, off-the-shelf software demonstrates lower TCO, lower deployment labor costs, faster add-on development and faster time-to-market compared to custom-built solutions.
Custom-built solutions entail a range of development and implementation risks. According to the Standish Group, in 2009 only 32 percent of software projects were considered to be successful while 44 percent were partially successful and 24 percent simply failed. Considered along with the limited ability to evaluate and predict the whole range of required functionality, these risks make it nearly impossible to estimate the solution's TCO or to take into account the necessary security measures.
The company noted that the security aspect of custom-built solutions often appeals to the fact they are more secure due to their limited usage and proprietary architecture. In fact, the security here is better described as unpredictable rather than robust. For developers who do not specialize in security, it is hard to address all the relevant issues, let alone that security is a moving target. Conversely, off-the-shelf software vendors normally adhere to secure development practices, integrate security frameworks ( bitrixsoft.com/products/cms/ security.php?r1=prnw&r2=bvsb) and regularly release free product updates. As a result, custom-built solutions have a greater vulnerability to targeted attacks and likelihood of application backdoors, inadvertent or otherwise, left by programmers. To ensure the solution's security, organizations must perform third-party security testing and code audits that significantly increase costs.
The highly-publicized vendor lock-in problem clearly misleads organizations about the nature of the issue. With custom-built solutions, organizations fall into dependence on internal development teams or third-party consultants - leading to much greater continuity risks in comparison to established software vendors.
The custom functionality to address specific business needs is another myth that doesn't stand up to criticism in the current market of off-the-shelf CMS software. Solutions now cover a range of business requirements based on thorough market research and customer feedback from the product's installed base.
On the flip side, Bitrix reported that custom-built solutions conceal certain business drawbacks both for organizations needing CMS software, third-party consultants and web development companies. In-house development distracts resources from the core competence and makes it a rather questionable investment with recurring expenses.
Bitrix is a privately-owned company developing a business communications platform to bridge SMBs with their customers (Internet), partners (Extranet) and employees (Intranet).

Qld: SEQ development costs highest in nation: survey
BRISBANE, April 28 AAP - Developers in southeast Queensland face the highest infrastructure
costs in the nation, intensifying the state's housing shortage, the Property Council says.
The federal government's National Housing Supply Council State of Supply report, released
on Tuesday, showed the gap between supply and demand across the nation had increased by
about 78,800 homes in the year to June 2009, to 178,400.
The council found Queensland had a shortfall of 56,100 homes, behind only NSW on 57,600
- as planning, zoning, and slow development approvals take their toll.
Property Council Queensland executive director Steve Greenwood said the cost of producing
housing in southeast Queensland was substantially above most other states, intensifying
the housing shortage.
"Local government infrastructure charges for water supply, sewerage, parkland, drainage,
transport and road upgrades are the highest in the country," Mr Greenwood told AAP on
Wednesday.
"At $25,000, they are $10,000 above NSW and substantially above those in Victoria and
other states.
"This means that housing cannot be produced at a price that is affordable for much
of the market."
The report found the cost of developing a two-bedroom unit in Brisbane was $525,362,
second only to Sydney on $553,621.
Mr Greenwood said a bottleneck of development assessments was also pushing up prices
and worsening the housing shortage.
"Excessive development assessment timeframes in Queensland are also adding to the cost
of new housing with developers forced to pass on holding costs to purchasers," Mr Greenwood
said.
He said the state government needed to address infrastructure charges, development
assessment timeframes and land supply.

Vic: Portrait of an arsonist
By Greg Roberts
MELBOURNE, Feb 11 AAP - The police say they are closing in on bushfire arsonists responsible
for the Saturday's hellfire, but what sort of people are they looking for?
Who would deliberately start bushfires that kill scores of men, women and children
when it's 47 degrees outside and a 100km/h gale is blowing?
The newspapers are full of angry people who have lost loved ones calling for blood,
but others are sure the perpetrators must be mentally ill.
The truth, however, is the firebugs are almost certainly not insane, says forensic
psychologist and criminologist Paul Wilson, of Queensland's Bond University, who has studied
arsonists.
Professor Wilson says he believes arsonists, rather than foolish kids or adolescents
playing with matches, are responsible for any bushfires deliberately lit last weekend.
"They are not psychiatrically sick at all," Prof Wilson told AAP on Wednesday.
"It is a myth to say most bushfire starters are pyromaniacs."
The typical arsonist or bushfire starter is a male, aged between 24 and 28, and a loner
who may have lit fires as a child.
However, that profile is based on arsonists who are caught, when 90 per cent of them
are not, Prof Wilson said.
"They do it for the excitement, they get a power trip from seeing the destruction they've
caused or during it and they have no remorse," he said.
"They have a grudge against a person or a situation, such as a girlfriend that left
them or an employer and they take out their anger and revenge by lighting fires.
"They are also likely to return to the scene of the crime to look at what they've done."
Prof Wilson said that same profile applied to Country Fire Authority volunteers who
started fires but returned to "show what good citizens they are" by putting out the fires
they started.
Police believe the fatal Gippsland fire was deliberately lit, and firebugs could be
responsible for more.
Victorian police announced a taskforce called Phoenix on Tuesday bringing in 100 police
to investigate all fire-related deaths from the bushfires and say they are confident of
making arrests.
The death toll from the bushfire disaster is 181 and rising.

NSW: Leckie stablised after grave turn for the worse
By Paul Carter
SYDNEY, April 18 AAP - Network Seven's boss David Leckie is in a serious but stable
condition in a Sydney hospital today after taking a grave turn for the worse yesterday,
a hospital spokesman says.
St Vincent's Private Hospital spokesman David Faktor said Mr Leckie was today in the
hospital's intensive care unit where he is being ventilated and is expected to remain
in an induced coma for the weekend at least.
"He took a grave turn for the worse yesterday and he was in a critical condition but
we have seen some improvements today and he has been stabilised," Mr Faktor told AAP.
Mr Leckie's wife Skye and brother have been at the hospital visiting the Seven chief executive.
He was brought into the hospital last weekend after contracting an infection following
an operation on his left index finger.
He almost severed the finger in an accident with a garage roller door at his Sydney
home a couple of months ago.
He recently had a second graft on the finger which triggered a serious infection.

US Freeway Toll (MINNEAPOLIS)
US authorities have lowered the death toll from an interstate bridge collapse to four
.. but warn the final number could change as divers search the Mississippi River.
Officials say initial reports of seven or even nine people killed were based on the
best estimates authorities had initially.
The eight-lane Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis was being repaired when the bridge
buckled during evening rush hour on Wednesday.
Emergency crews are continuing their cleanup and recovery work as questions mount about
the cause of the bridge's spectacular collapse.

Indian police now say there's no link between MOHAMED HANEEF and terrorist network
al-Qaeda .. and they deny preparing a secret file with the accusation.
Police in Bangalore say they have no file on Dr HANEEF .. who's returned home to India

lack of evidence.
Investigators have hosed down the al-Qaeda claims .. after the Federal Police moved
to clarify the source of the so-called dossier.
The document's been shown on SBS TV .. after allegedly being being handed to a reporter
by a senior Indian police officer.

days before his condition began to deteriorate rapidly .. and parents should have children
checked out immediately if they show symptoms.
Stolen (ADELAIDE)
South Australia's government's expecting more indigenous people to follow the lead

taken from his family 50 years ago.
But SA Attorney-General MICHAEL ATKINSON says the state government will consider creating
a compensation fund for the stolen generation .. like the one Tasmania has established.
He says while the government won't challenge Mr TREVORROW's compensation .. crown solicitors
will examine the court judgement for wider legal implications.
Dental (CANBERRA)
Nearly half the population cannot afford basic preventative dental care .. and most
people want Canberra to help meet the cost.
A survey conducted by activist forum AUSTRALIA FAIR says gaping holes exist in the
care and treatment of the nation's teeth and gums.
The Australian Council of Social Service-backed group says nine in ten people think
regular visits to the dentist are important .. but almost a quarter say they haven't seen
a dentist for more than two years.
And 46 per cent say they'd find it difficult for them to shell out the estimated 300
dollars for basic preventative treatment.
Three quarters say the federal government should share the cost of dental care.

Minister for Lands and Regional Development TONY KELLY has publicly stated his serious
doubts over the 10-billion-dollar plan .. and says Environment Minister PHIL KOPERBERG
is of the same view.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports Mr KELLY has told Griffith's Area News he's got serious
doubts about it .. saying the dairy industry was "stuffed" following the deregulation
process.
He says he's worried water will become another commodity .. to be bought and sold at
a profit .. and that Mr KOPERBERG also is not happy with several issues and has very serious
concerns.
Byelections (MELBOURNE)
The Victorian Liberal Party will not contest by-elections to fill the seats vacated
by outgoing Labor leaders STEVE BRACKS and JOHN THWAITES.
By-elections will be held in the seats of Williamstown .. held by outgoing premier
STEVE BRACKS .. and Albert Park .. held by his longtime deputy JOHN THWAITES .. following
their surprise resignations last week.
After much speculation .. the Liberal Party's administrative committee decided last
night NOT to contest the by-elections.
News Limited newspapers say the decision overrules a move by grassroots members.
States Hospital Roxon (CANBERRA)
Labor's blasted Canberra's stance on hospital funding .. saying Federal Health Minister
TONY ABBOTT has assumed more positions on hospital funding intervention than the Kama
Sutra.
Labor health spokeswoman NICOLA ROXON says Mr ABBOTT first suggested more hospitals
could be federally funded .. only to be pulled into line by Treasurer PETER COSTELLO.
She says the health minister doesn't seem to know if the decision to fund a hospital
in a marginal Tasmanian seat is genuine policy .. or just electioneering.
Meanwhile .. Tasmania's Treasurer is predicting Canberra's plans to underwrite a community-based
takeover of a state-run hospital could cost up to one billion dollars over the next 10
years.
MICHAEL AIRD says JOHN HOWARD'S 45 million-a-year proposal for Mersey hospital in the

the government's planed mergers of Noosa .. Caloundra and Maroochy shires.
IN FINANCE:
Rio Tinto (MELBOURNE)
Mining giant Rio Tinto has posted a 14 per cent drop in first half profit .. with rising

Like other big miners .. Rio Tinto has been riding a wave of demand from China and
other booming Asian economies.
But its efforts to supply those markets has been hampered by rising costs .. and a
lack of necessary infrastructure and quality ore bodies.
AND IN SPORT:

Fed: Lunchboxes 'sugar, fat and salt cocktails': study
By Roberta Mancuso
BRISBANE, April 17 AAP - The average child's lunchbox can contain as much sugar, fat
and salt as seven lollipops and a small salt shaker, a new study has found.
Brisbane dietician Kate Di Prima said common lunchbox snacks were "sugar, fat and salt
cocktails," contributing to health problems in children such as high blood pressure, obesity
and diabetes.
Twenty items commonly found in lunchboxes of children aged four to six were compared
nutritionally to a piece of fresh fruit.
Ms Di Prima said a lunchbox filled with fruit juice, a jam sandwich, teddy biscuits,
a muesli bar, a fruit wrap and a packet of dip and biscuits was like giving a child seven
lollipops and enough salt to fill a small shaker.
"Most of the foods studied were low in or had no vitamin C, little or no fibre in anything
and were quite high in sodium, or salt," she said today.
The foods "had quite a refined nature to them," resulting in a very high glycemic index,
which gives children a fast burst of energy but leaves them feeling hungry and lethargic
a short time later, she said.
"So in terms of children going to school and having those foods for morning tea, their
ability to concentrate and learn may be diminished if they're feeling hungry and getting
a bit ratty," she added.
Ms Di Prima said the worst food to give a child was fruit wraps. "It's almost like
a gum - it sticks to their teeth, it has no vitamins, no fibre, it is just pure sugar
rolled into a flat strap."
She said diets high in fat, sugar and calories and low in fibre could lead to physical
problems such as childhood diabetes and obesity.
That could lead to psychological problems such as social isolation and poor self-esteem,
she said.
Only 50 per cent of parents were found to be packing a piece of fresh fruit into their
children's lunchboxes.
"Children should eat at least one piece of fruit between the hours of 9am to 3pm and
a second piece after dinner each day," Ms Di Prima said.
"You might even have to go for the gimmicks, like boiling the fruit, or putting it
onto a little skewer."
Parents should also give children water instead of fruit juice and put meat on sandwiches
for protein, using freezer cubes to keep them cool.
"You need to make a distinction fairly early on in a child's life between junk and
good food," Ms Di Prima said.
"If you miss the boat ... it's a battleground to try to get them to come back to healthy
food again."
