NSW: Appeal for information in koala killing

SYDNEY, Dec 24 AAP - Wildlife officers are calling for help from the public after akoala was found shot dead north west of Sydney.

The body of the female koala was found in the backyard of a home in Colo Heights lastFriday and retrieved by the RSPCA, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)

An examination showed the animal had been shot in the chest.

NPWS spokeswoman Samantha Mattila said she was sickened by the koala's killing, especiallyas the tiny Hawkesbury colony was struggling to survive.

"We're talking about only a handful in that region," she said.

"We actually thought that the population had died out in the Hawkesbury area and onlyrecently we found two koalas there.

"To find one shot dead is tragic."

Under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, the killer faces up to six months in jailand/or a $3,300 fine.

"I have no idea what would compel someone to do something like that or what kind ofperson would want to do something like that," Ms Mattila said.

"The main thing we're concerned about is catching the perpetrators of this nasty crime."

Anyone with information should contact NPWS on (02) 4588 2400 or the RSPCA on (02) 9709 5433.
