Qld: Transplant patient continues to make good progress

The mother of a 25-year-old man who underwent an Australian-first heart, lung and livertransplant says her family was overjoyed when it heard the organs were available.

JASON GREY, who has cystic fibrosis, is recovering well in Brisbane's Prince Charles Hospital

He and his mother DEBBIE moved to Brisbane from Sydney more than a year ago to awaitsuitable donor organs for the life-saving operation to go ahead.

The date of the operation was kept secret for privacy reasons, but today Mrs GREY describedher reaction to news the organs had become available.

She says the family cried.

JASON GREY, aged 25, is in a stable and satisfactory condition in a general ward afterbeing transferred out of intensive care.

He was given his new organs in a 15 hour operation by a team of surgeons from the Heartand Lung Unit at Prince Charles and the Liver Transplant Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Prince Charles' executive director MICHAEL CLEARY says 1,800 Australians are waitingfor life saving organ transplants, including 50 children.

He says it could be up to three months before doctors can predict the long term outcomeof the surgery.
